Former Elon University Employee Killed In Afghanistan

ELON, NC -- A former Elon University staff member died in a bloody attack in Afghanistan on Friday.

The university confirmed the death in a note to students, faculty and staff members.

According to the email, Alexis Kamerman died in the attack at the restaurant in Kabul, Afghanistan.Kamerman worked at the school last year as a member of the Resident Life staff.

The vice president of student life, Smith Jackson, wrote: "she had many friends at Elon and was a very engaging and positive minded professional who championed the ideals of inclusion and respect." She had a love of travel and was working this year in residence life at the American University of Afghanistan."

Kamerman was in Afghanistan working in residence life at American University.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, Alexis was 27-years-old and from Chicago. Her family told the paper she took the job in Afghanistan to help young women get an education and become leaders.

A "Gathering of Friends" event was held Monday night on campus to remember Alexis.

Friends and faculty told stories about how she would stay up late with them to help them with school projects, how she made others feel loved and welcomed, and about the many "shenanigans" she loved to pull on others with her friends.

Friends also described Lexie as "strong and passionate." One person told WFMY News 2 Lexie "believed in leadership as servant hood."

According to a CNN report, 21 people, mostly foreigners, died in the Taliban attack that killed Kamerman.
