ASHEBORO, N.C. -- Deputies in Randolph County are investigating a fight Tuesday night that seriously wounded a man.
The sheriff's office said they received a report of a fight at Buelah Baptist Church on Howards Mill Road. When officers arrived, nobody was there.
Not long after they went to the church, the Moore County Sheriff's Office told them an assault victim was being airlifted to an area hospital.
The victim told deputies another man assaulted him in the Buelah Baptist Church parking lot. Officers said he had multiple injuries and fractures on his head and face.
Deputies arrested Audie Mitchell Maness. They say he beat the man with a wooden club.
Prosecutors charged him with Attempted Murder. He is currently in the Randolph County Jail under a $1 million bond.
Deputies said neither of the two men attend the church.
The Randolph County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident.
