WILMINGTON, N.C. -- A labor union says about 200 workers at a Corning Inc. factory in Wilmington are losing their jobs in a new round of layoffs. The company says it won't detail where the layoffs will fall.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports Saturday that the United Steelworkers union estimates about 180 of its members would be cut next month.

The specialty glass maker employs about 1,000 at its Wilmington plant.

Corning this week announced it planned layoffs, but would not specify which plants would feel the cuts. Corning said sales didn't meet expecations for the material used to transmit data on waves of light. The company says about 250 employees from its optical fiber business would be affected worldwide.

The company opened a new optical fiber plant in India in September.
