CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- After watching Back To The Future too many times in the 80s, Eric Chilton decided to spearhead a time capsule project for his senior class at UNC Chapel Hill.

He approached the student government with the idea and he was off and running.

After getting a time capsule committee together they manned a booth in the campus "pit" and took donations from the senior class to be placed in the time capsule.

Chilton said when he asked the welding company what he should use for the capsule they said "It may sound like a cliche since we're dealing with a college project, but a beer keg would be best."

And so it was.

It was buried in the spring of 1988 and a granite marker stated that it would be opened 25 years later in 2013.

That day is today.

Students, university officials and the president of the class of 1988 all gathered with Eric to see if the contents survived the quarter century.

Chilton said it was one of his proudest moments.

Useless trivia: Chilton was also the first mascot for The University of North Carolina.
