ARARAT, VA -- Builders, family and friends of Marine corporal J.B. Kerns broke ground at the site of his new home on Wednesday.
Kerns is a triple amputee who suffered injuries during an IED explosion in Afghanistan. The community of Ararat, Virginia gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to honor the Marine. It's his new path towards gaining independence.
Builders hope to have the log cabin complete for him to move in by July 4th. The house will also be a smart house with lots of technology to help Kerns. He'll be able to control his home from his phone or iPad.
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is teaming up with the Gary Sinise Foundation for the build.
