Greensboro, NC - Blue Cross Blue Shield opened a new office on New Garden Road in September to help people review health insurance plans.

The store opened on September 13th. The Greensboro location is one of seven stores opening up across the state.

"There's been a brisk activity of people asking questions as well as some wanting to go ahead and enroll. Of course, the big question is rates," said Ryan Kauffman.

Ryan Kauffman is an authorized Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance agent. He said people have started coming in asking questions but he expects the activity to increase on Tuesday, the first day of open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act.

That's why from October 1st- December 15th, the office will extend hours. Monday-Thursday, it'll be open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Blue Cross is participating in North Carolina's insurance marketplace operated by the federal government. Kauffman's office has some of the latest computer technology to help people navigate the plans and determine the plan in which they qualify.

Kauffman said, "Family size, taxable income, the modified adjusted gross income, which is typically line 37 of the tax return, those are two of the most important pieces of information as far as whether you're eligible for subsidy and how much it would be."

Kauffman thinks his office will be busiest after Thanksgiving because December 15th is the application deadline to start insurance by January 1st.

He also expects glitches in the computer systems. His office has been notified that there could be malfunctions in the first days of enrollment.

"I think there's going to be that initial rush of people wanting that information, wanting to know what the rates are but how fast people pick and actually chose a plan, I think might be a little bit of a delayed reaction."
