Kernersville, NC - Forsyth County Emergency Management says at least 15 patients were transported to various hospitals following a series of car accidents on Business 40 West in Kernersville, Thursday evening.

The first accident occurred just after 6:30pm.   Investigators say between 30-35 vehicles were involved in the string of car wrecks along a one mile stretch of the interstate between Linville Road and South Main Street.

Authorities are still trying to figure out what caused the accidents, but initial investigations blame wet roads.

August Vernon, Operations Officer with Forsyth County Emergency Management, says authorities believe the rain created a "mirror-effect" on the roads.

At least 15 people have been transferred to area hospitals, some with serious injuries.   The extent of injuries is unclear at this time but there have been no reported fatalities.

Forsyth County Emergency Management declared a "Mass-Casualty-Incident" because of the number of injuries. Forsyth County EMS even brought out their ambulance bus that can hold 20 patients.

The accidents backed up traffic for nearly 15 miles. Authorities reopened the lanes on Business West about two hours after the accidents occurred.

A majority of the accidents occurred in the westbound lane but Vernon says there were also accidents on the opposite side of the highway.

He says there were at least 5 accidents in the eastbound lanes. He believes the reason is most likely because people were stopping to look at the accidents.

Kernersville Police, Winston-Salem Police and Fire, Forsyth County EMS and Highway Patrol responded to the accidents.

This is a developing story. Stay with digtriad for updates.
