Winston-Salem, N.C. -- The Winston-Salem VA Regional Office will now begin helping to complete disability claims for Veterans who've been waiting for more than a year. That's because until now the office has also been helping to complete the final batch of the oldest claims still in progress.

The Department of Veterans Affairs said on Friday, it has completed more than 65,000 claims nationwide for Veterans who've waited a year or longer for claims to go through. That's about 97% of all claims over two years old.

Cheryl Rawls, the Winston-Salem Regional Office Director said their team has worked hard over the past two months to get to where they are. They completed 1,383 claims in North Carolina for Veterans who've been waiting more than years for a decision but she says there's still more work to be done.

"We're now focusing on eliminating the claims that are more than one year old. We're made great progress, but know much work remains to be done to eliminate the backlog in 2015," said Rawls.

The Department of Veterans Affairs hopes to complete the end of the disability claims backlog by the end of 2015 and then process claims within 125 days.
