Would You Trade Overtime for Comp. Time?

Triad, N.C. - Time and money. As you get older, the balancing act can become overwhelming. The extra hours logged at work can provide a financial cushion, but that extra cash can quickly lose its value once life catches up with you.

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx says parents want the option to take time off instead of overtime. That's why she supports the Working Families Flexibility Act.

"It's important to have enough money from your paycheck. But, money can't buy time. Many parents would like to have the time with their children," Foxx told WFMY News 2.
The bill gives employees the choice between

money or time off. However, employers could not force you to take time off instead of the extra cash. But, your boss has to approve your time off request.

The White House and the AFL-CIO have spoken out against the bill. They argue employers would abuse the bill and strongly suggest workers take time off instead of the money.

"That pressure...I'm really happy to have this job. I don't want to lose it. I need to go for the comp time. The worker shouldn't have to have that sort of pressure on them," Catherine Medlock-Walton, the Member Coordinator of Working America, an AFL-CIO affiliate, said.

But, Foxx told WFMY News 2, "The arguments that the administration has brought up and the unions have brought up are hollow arguments. They simply won't hold water."

This bill would only apply to hourly workers. If passed, the bill would change the way a lot of businesses operate. So, WFMY News 2 checked with a human resources expert to see how this might affect companies.

David Moff, with The HR Group said, "Any time there is any type of program, new regulation, new policy, that always creates additional paperwork or administrative work."
