Undated -- You've seen Allstate's mayhem commercials. They probably make you laugh. In one, the hot water heater explodes and goes through the roof. So 2 Wants to Know wanted to find out the life expectancy of appliances -- so you can be prepared to get a new one before something goes wrong.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average life expectancy for a refrigerator is about 13 years. A gas stove has the longest "life-span" of 15 years, but if you have an electric stove, it should last about 13 years. Expect to have both your dishwasher and microwave for about nine years.
And outside of the kitchen. Your average air conditioner should last 10 to 15 years. Your washer should last about 10 years, and the dryer, whether gas or electric, is about 10 years. That hot water heater, whether gas or electric, should last about 10 years.

Of course, all these time frames are affected by the quality of the maintenance of the products.
