  • Alamance County, NC-- Some Alamance County officials are trying a new approach that could mean 450 jobs.

North Carolina is in the basement when it comes to unemployment. Our unemployment rate sits at 9.2%. The national average is 7.5%.

Triad officials are hoping to lure a new company that could bring hundreds of jobs to the area.

This new project is expected to attract job seekers from the Triad to the Triangle. That's because of its location. We're looking at a 1,200 acre area in the middle of Alamance County.

Frankie Maness, the Graham City Manager said, "At this point we're crossing our fingers and hoping for the best."

Alamance County and the cities of Graham and Mebane have created the best business plan they could possibly come up with.

They're trying to entice a large distribution center they're calling, "Project Swordfish."

Graham will pay to run the water pipes. Mebane will handle the sewer system. Alamance County and the two towns plan to each pay a third of the expenses and evenly split the tax revenue. The joint initiative is the only way they'd be in the running for something this big.

Craig Honeycutt, the Alamance County Manager said, "This is potentially one of the largest projects that could be coming to Alamance county and as far as investment and job creation, you know when you have an unemployment over 9%, 450 jobs is huge."

In total, the project is a $98-million investment. The 450 jobs would pay an average salary of $36,000.

"Project Swordfish" is the code name for the company. There have been rumors that it could be a Walmart distribution center. The Graham City Manager and Alamance County Manager wouldn't say anything to News 2 about what this company could be.

A Sheetz distribution center is already under construction in Burlington. That's supposed to bring almost 300 jobs to the area.
