High Point, NC -- As Congress continues to discuss one of our nation's most pressing issues, local officials are doing what they can to prevent gun violence.

High Point city officials and community leaders hosted a firearms awareness forum tonight at Memorial United Methodist Church.

Community members came to hear from leaders about what they're doing to protect the community from gun violence and to learn ways residents can help prevent it.

The panel included Mayor Bernita Sims, Quentin Trent, director of School Safety and Security for Guilford County Schools, Chief Marty Sumner and Rev. Jessie C. Keaton of Memorial United.

Keaton says officials hosted the event because they care about the community's safety.

"We were very concerned about what is happening in our community, as it relates to firearm safety and security for our children and the citizens of our community," Keaton said.
