Sumter, SC-- Sumter police said a 3-year-old boy is dead from a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound to his upper body.
The 9-1-1 call came in from the Magnolia Manor Apartments around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Sumter police arrived to discover the boy dead. Neighbors next door were surprised by the shooting.
"We don't have any problems out here at all, so this is very shocking to us," Magnolia resident Lekia Cole said.
After a preliminary investigation, police said the 3-year-old child found the gun. Authorities said the boy was from Georgia visiting family members.
Magnolia apartment manager Terri Rodriguez has worked there for 13 years.
"It's very unusual for this apartment complex," Rodriguez said. "It's just such a tragedy and everybody here is just very emotional right now."
Sumter Deputy Chief Alvin Holston said gun safety is crucial.
A good reminer: always unload weapons before you bring them into the home.
Holston said shootings like this one are rare. The last time he's seen this was seven or eight years ago.
