GREENSBORO, N.C. -- If you haven't noticed already, the cold temperatures are on the way, and you'll want to make sure your house is ready to brave the winter cold.

When it comes to winter-proofing your home, there are some tips you'll want to remember:

1. Use a programmable thermostat to save energy and be sure to replace your air filter regularly.

2. Turn the direction of the ceiling fans so they move air toward the ceiling.

3. Check seals around windows and doors, as well as insulation to make sure you're trapping heat inside your home.

4. Check exterior crawl space vents to be sure they are closed and not letting in cold air.

The U.S. Department of Energy has more information about saving money and keeping your house warm this winter on its website.

WFMY News 2's Patrick Wright and Tom Garcia were out Thursday morning to talk about these tips - along with others - to help you get your house ready for the cold.
