Samsung plans on releasing the latest model of its popular Galaxy S smartphone by April.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Samsung mobile chief Lee Young Hee revealed the company will launch the Galaxy S5 in three months, and will pair it with an upgraded version of its Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

Lee did not provide specifics on what changes will appear on the Galaxy S5, but will represent a greater jump compared to the shift from the S3 to the S4. "We will go back to the basics," Lee tells Bloomberg. "Mostly, it's about the display and the feel of the cover."

Lee says the company is studying the inclusion of an eye scanner in its smartphones, but wouldn't confirm whether that will be a feature in the S5. Also, the updated Galaxy Gear smartwatch will include additional functions and improvements to the "bulky design."

Details on the Galaxy S5 are expected during next month's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Samsung has stepped forward as one of the chief rivals to Apple and its iPhone. Last fall, Apple launched the iPhone 5s with fingerprint sensor and the lower-cost 5c.

But electronics giant Samsung commands a large share of the global smartphone market, according to IDC. More than 31% of the smartphones shipped globally during the third quarter of last year were Samsung devices, compared to 13% for Apple.
