NASHVILLE, N.C. -- A funeral is scheduled for the mother of North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper.
Cooper's office confirmed Beverly Batchelor Cooper died Saturday at her Nash County home at age 84. A spokeswoman for the attorney general says his mother was diagnosed with cancer last year. Cooper says in a statement his mother also battled cancer twice before.
Beverly Cooper for years was a local middle and high school teacher. The attorney general often jokes at speaking engagements he received more compliments about his mother's teaching than his own work. He says those who met his mother "also learned about a life of giving and caring."
Mrs. Cooper is survived by her husband of 61 years, two sons and four grandchildren. The funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Nashville Baptist Church.
