  • GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Millions will be watching more than the road when they head out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday. They will also be watching the forecast. Wicked winter weather could affect your travel plans.

Whether you're driving to visit family or shopping for black Friday deals, there are ways to prepare.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation offers real-time information about roads by either calling 511 from your cell phone or by following them on Facebook or Twitter.

If you log onto ncdot.gov, you can look at a map that color-codes major roads. Green means good, while yellow or red means traffic may be slow-moving.

Also on the site, check live traffic cameras around the state to see road conditions for yourself before you head out.

One more resource involves your smartphone. This is a job for the passenger, not the driver. Just type in m.ncdot.gov on your phone's browser to access all this information on-the-go.

You can always stay up to date with the latest news and weather right in your neighborhood with the WFMY News 2 App. Download that for free in the iTunes store.
