WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- It's been a hot topic in the city of Winston-Salem for the last few months and Monday night City Council voted unanimously to go forward.
Councilmember Dan Besse told WFMY News 2 council voted 7-0 Monday night to approve the plan to put a Walmart near the corner of Country Club and Meadowlark Drive.
Developers said the store will not be a Walmart superstore, but about the same size as the average grocery store.
Besse said council member Robert Park spearheaded the efforts and worked on meeting the satisfaction of neighbors in the area. A meeting with a packed gymnasium in September was held for neighbors to express their concerns, with many feeling the store would be bad for traffic.
After Monday night's public hearing, city council plans to move forward with the revised plan. This includes details such as street repair improvements, where to have turning lanes, tree planting on site, and pedestrian traffic.
