GREENSBORO, N.C. -- WFMY News 2, in conjunction with the Salvation Army, Mattress Firm and Chick-Fil-A, launched the fourth-annual "Stuff a Stocking" campaign Thursday, in an effort to "stuff" more than 14,000 stockings for Triad children this holiday season.
As of Thursday, community members willing to participate can pick up a stocking from any Salvation Army command, Mattress Firm, Chick-Fil-A or WFMY News 2. Attached to the stockings are suggested lists of items for age groups ranging from infant to 12. Stuffed stockings must be returned to any partner location by Dec. 13, after which the Salvation Army will distribute them to Triad families.
Last year, the Salvation Army said it helped more than 20,000 children in the Triad receive stockings.
Salvation Army major Don Vick said, "You should see the faces of the parents as they leave our distribution center--a real great sense of relief. Now they can put that behind them. Don't have to worry about having toys for their kids for Christmas, so it's really a great thing to see, and it really starts here today by putting stockings together at Mattress Firm."
A team of Mattress Firm employees joined WFMY News 2 Thursday morning to launch the campaign and begin the stocking-stuffing process.
Employee Michelle Stephenson, who has a young daughter, affirmed this act of community outreach is not only a company effort but a personal one. "It's amazing the joy you get as a parent just watching your child open those presents on Christmas morning, and I cannot imagine not being able to give that to her, so I think it would be great for everyone to come out and just show a little bit of love for the community this year," Stephenson said.
For each stocking Mattress Firm customers bring in, the store is distributing $50 gift cards that can be used toward any store item.
