KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office says a 25-year-old woman is dead after she was attacked by two pit bulls.
Deputies went to a home in the 2700 block of Stable Hill Trail on Monday evening.
According to the sheriff's office, Katherine Renee Atkins was lying dead in the backyard near the dogs' enclosure. Investigators said the dogs were running loose.
A man who lives at the home says the dogs belong to his roommate. Atkins was his roommate's girlfriend.
The man told investigators Atkins fed the dogs because her boyfriend was running late from work. He explained that both Atkins and her boyfriend raised the dogs since they were puppies.
A spokesperson from the sheriff's office said they don't know why the dogs turned on her.
Animal Control took both dogs into custody and euthanized them. The results from a necropsy - an animal autopsy - are pending.
The sheriff's office calls the incident a "terrible tragedy." They say they don't plan on filing any criminal charges.
