GREENSBORO, NC -- Just this week, a WFMY News 2 family member had a fire in their home.

You're going to do 1 of 2 things; leave or fight the fire.
April Robertson from the Greensboro Fire Department says the number one mistake people make when they stay and choose to fight the fire with an extinguisher is, "they can't find it. they stuck it under the sink, behind the cleaners, it's not easy to get to. "

The Greensboro Fire Department set a fire in a small trash can so 2 Wants To Know could learn and then share with you what to do when you get the extinguisher in your hand.

"You don't want to wait until there is a fire to figure out how the extinguisher works best." April says remember, PASS: Pull out the pin, Aim the nozzle or hose, Squeeze the handle and Sweep the fire from the bottom.

April says every fire extinguisher needs to be recharged every year, regardless of whether it has been used or not. 2WTK also tried a product that was $12.99 called Tundra. It did put out the small fire that was set, but you have to be 3-feet from the fire for it to make an impact. A fire extinguisher can spray from 6 feet back.

Fire extinguishers have limits. If there is a fire & you are not trained to use an extinguisher, you should not try. They are meant to fight small fires (such as trash can fires).

The most common extinguisher is ABC extinguisher. These are usually around 10lbs and are good on Class A (ordinary combustibles) Class B (flammable liquids) and Class C (energized electrical equipment).

If you buy a decent extinguisher (not the cheap ones with plastic gauges & handles) they will usually last about 6 years, but needed to be inspected and possibly tested once a year. After about 5-6 years, they need to be emptied, inspected internally, seals/o-rings replaced, and recharged.

Make sure that you always keep your back towards the exit. Never put the fire between you & your exit in case you are unable to get the fire out.

Greensboro Fire Department, as does many fire department,  can schedule a fire extinguisher class for your office, or a Fire Safety Class for their neighborhood, church, or other event.
