WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Poet Maya Angelou will receive an award next month from the National Book Awards honoring her service to the American literary community.
Angelou will receive the 2013 Literarian Award on Nov. 23 in New York City.
She returned Thursday to Winston-Salem from New York, where she received an award for lifetime achievement from the Norman Mailer Center. On Friday, she read a poem and sang a song at Wake Forest University as part of a conference about the Civil War in North Carolina.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported she discussed her journey from humble beginnings to her position as Reynolds professor of American studies at WFU.
Angelou wrote the 1970 book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." In 1993, she wrote a poem for the inauguration of President Bill Clinton.
