RALEIGH, N.C. -- An exhibit of 22 racing and street cars made by Porsche is opening at the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh.

The exhibit titled "Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed" opens Saturday at the museum in Raleigh. It includes a 1938 car designed by company founder Ferdinand Porsche, along with actor Steve McQueen's 1958 Speedster, singer Janis Joplin's 1965 Type 356C Cabriolet and several race cars.

Guest curator Ken Gross says Porsches are special because they have a continuity of design that's evident from that earliest car in the exhibit to the most recent, a 2010 Type 911 Sport Classic Carrera.

Museum director Larry Wheeler says Porsches belong in a museum because they're "rolling sculpture." Other U.S. art museums have exhibited cars, including the Museum of Modern Art in 1951.
