WILLARD, N.C. -- Nearly 80 animals have been rescued from a Pender County site after someone complained about a sick puppy.
The Humane Society of the United States said Wednesday that the sheriff's office served a search warrant on the property and found large and small-breed dogs and puppies suffering from a multitude of untreated medical conditions. The dogs were living outside in wire chicken coops and in a breeze way filled with filth.
Deputies also found chickens, three calves, a horse and a goat on the property. The society said the owner agreed to surrender the animals.
Authorities have transported the dogs to a temporary emergency animal shelter where they will be examined by veterinarians and receive any necessary medical treatment.
