THOMASVILLE, N.C. - Nakia Moore now hugs her son and sister a little tighter.

"I hug him. I kiss him I play with him more like I just thank God everyday that my sister saved him and put him to the side because if she didn't something seriously probably could have happened," said Moore.

"I was walking the stroller and I heard a boom then a crash and then I looked back," said Shadell Johnson, Moore's 13-year-old sister.

Shadell was pushing her 2-year-old nephew Nashir in a stroller when police say a drunk driver slammed into a utility pole, and didn't stop.

The crash happened in Thomasville on Salem Street. Police charged 30-year-old Erin Renee Trotter with the crime.

"My sister said get out the way, get out the way," said Shadell.

Shadell started running, trying to get Nashir to safety. But she says Trotter hit the stroller and flipped it over with Nashir inside.

"It was scary.. I thought they were dead," said Moore.

Shadell says Trotter ran over her feet and arm. She only has minor injuries and Nashir was not hurt.

The family is thankful but upset because police say it's an accident that didn't have to happen.

"That's all I've been thinking about ever since it happened. Like all this could have been avoided if she just wasn't drinking and driving," said Moore.

"If anything I would like to say to her don't drink and drive. Because lives can get lost it's not worth it, its' really not worth it," said Shadell's mother, Nakia Allen.

Trotter is charged with Driving While Impaired and Resisting Arrest.
