DURHAM, N.C. -- Authorities have released the name of an armed man fatally shot by Durham police.
Officers on Wednesday identified the man as 26-year-old Derek Deandre Walker of Durham.
Police said they received a call at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday about a distraught man with a gun near a large bull statue in downtown. Police said officers had negotiated with the man for about an hour when he pointed the gun at them, prompting an officer to fire.
Walker was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.Durham police and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the shooting. The officer involved, Cpl. R.C. Swartz, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the review.
Police say Swartz joined the department in 2001 and is assigned to the Special Operations Division.
