ASHEVILLE, NC - A federal judge has sentenced a man to 21 months in prison for threatening to kidnap and kill a retired U.S. Forest Service officer and rape the man's wife.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports U.S. District Judge Martin Reidinger also ruled that 36-year-old Jeremy Sol Mintz must serve three years of supervised probation following his release and get treatment for mental health issues.

Court records show Mintz made the threats in telephone calls between July 2011 and January 2012.

Records say the harm would be in retaliation for the man performing his official duties, but the court documents don't say what the threats were made in retaliation for.

Defense attorney Fredilyn Sison said Mintz never intended to harm the victim, adding that he was drunk when he made the call.
