WFMY -- The kids don't want to hear this, but summer vacation is winding down.

Parents are probably ready to send the kids back to school.  But before you do, we have a checklist that parents need to know about.

Dr. Robert Poth, with Triad Adult and Pediatric Medicine, Inc, shared some of the best tips for parents.

Specifically, Poth said parents need to pay close attention to their kids' health.  Here's his checklist:

Annual Physical Exam (children)

-Immunizations

-Vision and Hearing Screening

-Age-Appropriate Developmental Screening-Identifying those children who may need additional behavioral health support; different types of school accommodations

-Lead Screening and Testing (children 6 months through six years of age)

-Nutrition Assessment and Counseling

-Extensive Anticipatory Guidance to prepare parents for the normal growth and Annual Teen Physical Exam

-Immunizations-HPV Vaccination and catch-up on other vaccinations

-Behavioral Risk Assessment, to include assessment of the following:  drinking, smoking, drugs, sexual activity and depression

-Nutritional Assessment and Counseling

-Monitoring of Chronic Health Conditions-Laboratory Tests

-Complete Physical Exam for Sports Physicals

-Pediatricians will address some sports-specific issues, including injuries, nutrition, training and exercise programs, and even attitudes in the course of the exam. Overuse and over-training are serious risks.

Katelyn Hedrick, a Registered Dietician with Triad Adult and Pediatric Medicine, also shared some tips for parents, who want to pack healthy lunches for their kids.

Hedrick said its important to teach kids about a balanced plate and healthy portion sizes when they're young.
