WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest senior nose guard Nikita Whitlock has been named to the 2013 Bednarik Award watch list, as announced by the Maxwell Football Club on Monday.
The Bednarik Award is given annually to the College Defensive Player of the Year. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
Whitlock is a two-time All-ACC honoree, earning second team honors each of the past two seasons. The Wylie, Texas, native has amassed 116 total tackles during his career in addition to 30 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.
Whitlock enters the 2013 season just two tackles for loss shy of entering the school's career top-10 list. He is also 2.5 sacks shy of the all-time sacks list.
A total of 74 players are included on the preseason watch list for the Bednarik Award. The list features 10 players from seven ACC schools, including Wake Forest's Whitlock.
Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced on Oct. 29, while the three finalists for the award will be unveiled Nov. 25. The winner of the 2013 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held in Dec. 12.
The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's selection committee, which analyzes both past performance and future potential. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, FBS head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for the award.
