Greensboro, NC -- 2 Wants To Know is all about getting you answers and each week Meteorologist Grant Gilmore gets answers for your weather questions.

On Wednesday Grant answered Yolanda Harper's question, " How does lightning create the sound of thunder?"

Answer: The lightning heats the air immediately surrounding the lightning bolt and causes the air to rapidly expand. The heated air then cools and rapidly contracts. This rapid expansion and contraction causes air molecules to vibrate, creating the sound of thunder.

If you have a weather question you would like answered in the 2 Wants To Know Newscast you can send them to Grant on facebook, twitter or email.
