Burlington, NC -- Police arrested a Burlington man after they say he assaulted his wife in the couple's apartment Friday.

A police officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Huffman Mill Road Friday afternoon. The driver told the officer he was heading to the Commerce Place Apartments to check on a friend who had been assaulted by her husband, according to the police department.

Officers followed the driver to the apartment, and when they arrived, they found Robert Wendell Jones and his wife inside.

Police say the wife had "obvious facial bruising," as well as cuts and possible fractures that showed she had been assaulted, according to a news release.

EMS transported the woman to Alamance Regional for treatment; her condition is unknown.

Police arrested Robert Jones at the apartment and charged him with assault inflicting serious bodily injury and assault by strangulation.

He's being held in the Alamance County jail but will not receive a bond until he's been in the jail for 48 hours under the county's domestic violence guidelines.
