Periodontists say the most common cause of bad breath is a coating on the tongue. They say a coating that contains bacteria that helps break down left over food. These bacteria also give us bad breath.

Getting rid of any excess food in the mouth is key. You should brush and floss your teeth and then scrape your tongue. Clean it enough so that it's pink and healthy.

There are products called tongue scrapers or use your toothbrush to clean your tongue. A mouthwash or a sugarless mint may help temporarily, but if your bad breath won't go away have your dentist check for cavities or gum disease.

There are a number of foods and beverages that can cause short term bad breath such as onions, garlic, coffee and alcohol.
The effects disappear relatively quickly, frequently within a matter of hours.

Some say eating certain foods such as green tea or fruit can help, and though good for your health, they may not really help your breath.

Doctors know that certain health condition can lead to bad breath such as acid reflux, sinusitis and stomach ulcers.

But for most, taking care of your tongue and teeth may be all we need to do to keep our breath smelling fresh.
