High Point, NC -- Tens of thousands of people will make way to the High Point Furniture Market Saturday, and they may feel like they're walking through a rain forest at times, because of the surplus of green labels on display.

The Business Journal reports, the variety of eco-claims is rivaled only by the variety of certifications, labels and organizations that exist to document them.

Susan Inglis, Executive Director of the Chapel Hill based Sustainable Furnishings Council, a membership organization that promotes environmentally practices told The Business Journal, "It's a problem particularly when there's more than one certificate about the same thing. They they can't tell if it's this one or that one that they'll respond to, and they'll say 'I'll just go home and research it,' and not buy today."

The website EcoLabelIndex.com counts 27 different environmental labels commonly used by furniture makers around the world, ranging from CertiPUR's voluntary indoor air emissions standards to the Brazilian SustentaX Seal, which is meant to signal compliance with social environmental and marketing standards.

The High Point based American Home Furnishings Alliance trade group is trying to provide a comprehensive environmental certification through its new Eco3Home program, formally launched a year ago.
