Greensboro, NC-- They fight for our country time and time again. But unfortunately, many veterans are not living a good life back here at home.

WFMY News 2's Sandra Hughes met a man who is leading a strong effort to make veterans feel proud and loved.

Archie Barrow is this months "2 Those Who Care" recipient.

"They teach us in the military to give back... and this is giving back, this is what it's all about." Strong words from a dedicated veteran.

"They took time to serve their country, now it's time for us to help them when they are down."

Archie, a veteran himself, is determined to give his fellow soldier a boost. More than 200 veterans showed up on a rainy morning to get a hot meal, haircuts, medical screenings and eye exams.

"This guy's got to get back in the dental chair right now. They going to pull three teeth in three different places and as soon a he gets out of the chair, his ride is ready to go," says Archie of a veteran in need of quick dental care.

One man was thankful for a new pair of shoes, "I can stay dry now."

Raymond Bruins, who nominated Barrow for the award, admires his dedication to the cause, "he goes out and finds veterans on the street and he pulls them back into the folds of society and really makes a difference in individual lives."

The "Stand Down" was staffed by close to 200 volunteers with some of them working up to a year to put the event together.

Chris Barnett is a homeless veteran, "This helps me get some of the things I need, sometimes you need a little lift from the community to let you know that everything is alright."

Archie says there is only one way he'll give up this mission, "I say 'till there are no more homeless vets and to me if there is one homeless vet, that's one too many."
