Greensboro -- Kevin Preston says firefighting is in his blood. His father was a firefighter. He grew up in the fire station and learned early on to appreciate "the brotherhood".
It's a brotherhood which stretches beyond the local fire department. According to Preston, it is a bond that ties together all firefighters, regardless of where they may live and work.
After 9/11, Preston and his roommates, who were also in the fire service, spent a week in New York. They did what they could do to help. They also spent time just talking to the men and sharing their pain.
Ten years later, he is training for the New York City Marathon, coming up in November. He is also raising money for the Leary Firefighters Foundation, started by Dennis Leary in 2000. The charity raises money to make sure fire departments have the latest technology and training. It worked to improve communication after 9/11. It also paid for rescue boats after Hurricane Katrina.
