Greensboro, NC -- Chief Tim Bellamy is retiring from the Greensboro Police Department on July 31.  He has served on the force for 26 years.

Bellamy sent a letter to city staffers early Tuesday morning setting the end of July date.  He has served as chief of police since March 2007 when David Wray resigned his position.

In November, Bellamy told WFMY News 2 that he planned to retire.  He had not set an exact date at that point.

That announcement came days after the election of Bill Knight as Greensboro's mayor.  Bellamy said at the time his decision wasn't political, it's "just the right time for him."
