Charlotte, NC -- Trustees for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte have announced plans to move forward with a football team, starting in the 2013 season.

The Charlotte Observer reports that trustees agreed Friday to go ahead with the plan.

The university will seek approval from UNC system leaders to raise student fees to the pay for the program.

The move would require an increase of student fees of up to $320, to be phased in over several years. UNC Charlotte's chancellor says the student fee could go down if private donations toward the football program increase.

University officials will also ask state lawmakers to approve construction of a $45 million stadium complex.
