For more than 30 years, Cathy Merritt worked as a teacher. Now that she has retired, she has started her own lunchroom... but she isn't serving students.
Eden, NC -- Cathy Merritt has always focused on kids. She was a teacher for 30 years. Then just before she retired, she says the Lord put it on her heart to work with seniors...not the ones in high school, but senior citizens.
It was quite a shift but Cathy quickly adjusted. She began a monthly ministry to widows, and it takes just about the whole month to get it together.
For 9 months out of the year, Cathy serves lunch to widows at her church. She does most of the shopping and cooking herself. She has friends who help her the last week before the lunch. She begins planning the next month's meal right after one month's lunch is done. She buys her groceries and door prizes on sale throughout in the weeks leading up to the event. With as many as 70 ladies showing up, she has learned to cook ahead of time and freeze some dishes.
She says her motto is giving out God's love. She not only lives it but passes it along to the widows. She says, "I told the ladies when I started this group, that my job is to make them feel special. Their job is to go out and make somebody else feel special."
She doesn't take credit for her kindness. She says, "When you're doing what God wants you to do, there's no better feeling in the world. Because He gives you the strength to do it."
