Winston-Salem, NC -- A police officer is on administrative duty, and a Winston-Salem man is in jail after an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning.
Police say Officer Larry D. Blevins was walking in the 1500 block of N. Liberty St. when he saw Victor Darnell Fortune. Blevins told investigators he thought Fortune had illegal drugs and tried to arrest him. Fortune resisted arrest and ran from the scene.
Blevins tried using his taser on the suspect, but Fortune ran into a wooded area behind the Citgo on N. Liberty St.
The officer eventually caught up to the suspect, and the two got into a scuffle. While the two struggled, Fortune took Blevins' taser and used it on the officer.
Officer Blevins then pulled out his gun and fired two rounds; one of them hit Fortune in his upper left thigh. Blevins arrested Fortune after firing the shots.
Paramedics took Fortune to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he was treated for a non-life-threatening injury and later released.
Fortune is charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and distribute cocaine, resisting/delaying and obstructing a police officer, and assault on a law enforcement officer.
Police put Fortune in the Forsyth County Detention Center without bond.
He was also served with 12 outstanding drug-related felonies.
The State Bureau of Investigation is taking over the case, as is protocol for all officer-involved shootings. Winston-Salem police will investigate the assault on a law enforcement officer charges, as well as Fortune's drug violations. The Professional Standards Division will conduct an administrative investigation as well.
Blevins is a two and a half-year veteran with WSPD. He has been placed on administrative duty while authorities look into the shootings, which is also protocol in these cases.
