Ruffin, NC-- Men and women behind the badge will tell you being off duty is an understatement, especially when they see a crime being committed.
Thanks to an "off duty deputy" who was in the right place at the right time, two men are now in jail for stealing.
According to a news release, around 9:30 am on Monday, Lt. Mark Kennon was driving his personal vehicle in the area of Oregon Hill Rd. and Worsham Mill Rd. and saw two men stealing mail out of mailboxes in that area.
He stopped and detained them until Deputies on duty arrived to take them into custody. The suspects were identified as Randy Lee Martin Jr., 22 and Joseph Michael Annas, 23
Sheriff Sam Page released this statement about the crime and arrest: "This time of year especially, we want to remind everyone to keep an eye on your and your neighbors' mailboxes. A lot of cards are being sent this time of year with money and
gift cards in them, and the bad guys know this. They are always out for a quick buck. If you are sending cards with money, checks or gifts cards in them, we encourage you to drop those off directly at the Post Office if you can. If you see anyone snooping around mailboxes, call 9-1-1 immediately. I commend Lt. Kennon for his quick actions in taking these two thieves into custody."
Martin and Annas are each charged with seven counts of Larceny. They were each given a $500 unsecured bond and released from custody.
Federal charges may be forthcoming on Martin and Annas, as tampering with mail is a Federal Offense.
