Greensboro, NC -- Marilyn Monroe sang, "Diamonds are a girls best friend", but I think young Rutledge was taken in by the beauty of diamonds in their natural state.

Lane Schiffman from Schiffman's explained how diamonds do indeed go from a rough around the edges rock, to a sparkling gem.

"Diamonds are found 100 miles underneath the earth's surface and they're formed under tremendous heat and pressure."

Schiffman goes on to explain diamonds are the purest form of Carbon, which is one of the most abundant elements in the world.

"This purest form of carbon is brought to the surface in this blue ground or kimberlite. It  is impregnated with diamonds and is brought up to the earth's surface through volcanic activity."

Schiffman showed the before and after. Rutledge may have been mesmerized by the natural rock, but I like the polished piece!
