The NC state auditors office has been busy with one audit after another of government agencies and their finances. Two recent audits caught our attention.

First, the audit of the North Carolina Virtual Public School. The school offers e-learning opportunities to middle and high school students in all 115 school districts and in 36 charter schools. Auditors found the school didn't have adequate controls to find errors in student enrollment numbers.  That's important because the student enrollment numbers are a key factor in determining the school's teacher pay!

In response to the audit, Virtual public school officials say the enrollment errors the audit found were the result of a cut and paste error in the report. But that the actual values were correct in calculating the teacher pay.

The auditors office also looked into the Department of Public Safety's Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice.

They found the department overpaid six officers at the Wayne Correctional Institute. The error happened because the officers were in the payroll system wrong, they got more than $58,000 in error from April 2008 through March 2012.  The officers will be paying the money back, but the Department established a repayment schedule with each officer so they don't have the financial hardship of repaying it all at once.
