GREENSBORO, NC -- 2WTK  is taking a close look at a recent report by the North Carolina Justice Center.

Their findings show state money for education this year is below a 40-year average. The full report is linked to the NC Justice Center site above.

What caught our eye was the state funding per student. Their report shows average state funding per student was at $5,864  in 2008 but in 2014 it will be $5,211. That's a drop of $653.

We had parents asking, what is included in that number?
How do they get  the price per student?

Basically, all state funding spent on schools is added together.
That includes everything from teacher salaries to instructional supplies, textbooks, technology, transportation, etc.

That number is divided by the number of students in the state.

The State Department of Public Instruction lists the average state total per pupil spending a few hundred dollars more.
But their latest numbers are from the 2011-2012 school year.
