Greensboro, NC -- Generic drugs are a great way to save on prescription costs. Consumer Reports looked into the price of brand names versus generic. Like other generic products, generic drugs may be a different color, shape or taste. But generic drugs are covered by the law. They must have:
- the same active ingredients
- the same strength
- and work the same way as the brands they copy.
The big difference with generic drugs is the price. We compared three brand drugs - Lipitor, Plavix and Singulair - to their generics. Let's just use Lipitor as an example. It was most expensive at Walmart for $200.68. But the generic at Walmart is $47.88, a difference of $152!
Remember, the cheapest place you could buy brand-name Lipitor was at Costco for $149.35. But the cheapest generic is also at Costco for $15.49! That's a $133!
