Greensboro, NC - With grilling season about to be in full swing, there's a few safety tips from former Fire Marshall David Douglas that you should know first.

  • Preparing to use: For gas grills - make sure there aren't any leaks in the line. These can be detected by using a spray bottle full of soapy water. If the water bubbles up when you coat the tubing, there's most likely a leak. Also make sure that there's no debris blocking any air vents or openings.
  • Grill placement: Make sure the grill is 10 feet or more away from your home. Don't put it in a natural area (like grass). Instead try to place it on a rock or stone surface. But even a wood deck is better than grass.
  • Lighting the grill: For charcoal- try to avoid lighter fluid. It can case large fireballs which could burn you. Instead you a fire starter metal chimney. You can see one by playing the video attached to this story. For gas - don't leave it running too long before you try igniting. Gas may pool up at the bottom and cause a large fire.
